How it works

Three simple steps to structured boxing. No bureaucracy. No gatekeeping. Just math.

1

Your gym signs up

Gym coordinator creates an account, sets up the roster, and configures your first event. Takes 5 minutes.

2

Fighters register

Fighters pick their weight class, sign the waiver, get a permanent fighter ID. Their record starts today.

3

Fight and climb

Every bout updates the leaderboard. Earn title shots. Win championships. Build your legacy.

The math behind the rankings

ELO is a rating system created by Arpad Elo in the 1960s. It assigns a numeric rating to every competitor. When two fighters compete, their ratings adjust based on the outcome and the probability of that outcome.

Beat a higher-rated fighter? Your rating jumps significantly. The upset is rewarded.

Lose to a lower-rated fighter? Your rating drops more. The system self-corrects.

Even matchup? Small adjustments either way. The system stays stable.

Over time, every fighter's rating converges on their true skill level. No committee needed. No politics. The same math that ranks chess grandmasters now ranks your fighters.

Frequently asked questions

What is the ELO rating system?
ELO is a mathematical rating system developed in 1960 for chess. It calculates a numeric skill rating based on head-to-head competition results. When you win against a higher-rated opponent, your rating increases more. When you lose to a lower-rated opponent, it decreases more. Over time, ELO converges on your true skill level.
How is ELO different from a win-loss record?
A win-loss record treats all wins equally. ELO weights wins based on opponent strength. Beating a 1700-rated fighter is worth more than beating a 1200-rated fighter. This means your rating tells the full story of your competitive history, not just raw numbers.
Do I need a sanctioning body to use MatchRank?
No. MatchRank operates independently of sanctioning bodies. Any verified bout can be logged in the system. Your ranking is portable and belongs to you, not to any organization.
Is MatchRank free?
Free for fighters, forever. Gyms get free access during beta. We believe every fighter deserves a ranking without a paywall.
What happens to my ranking if I switch gyms?
Nothing. Your ranking and record travel with you. Your permanent fighter ID is tied to you, not your gym. Switch gyms, move cities, take a year off -- your record is always there.
How many fights does it take for my ELO to be accurate?
ELO starts converging on your true skill level within 10-15 bouts. By 30-50 bouts, the rating is highly stable and accurately reflects your competitive level.
